SPECPOL, the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, is tasked with a wide range of political issues focused on decolonization, peacekeeping efforts, and peaceful uses of outer space. Currently, the Fourth Committee can be viewed as the United Nations Security Council's gateway, since the questions discussed at the Council are often assessed earlier by SPECPOL.
The nationalist movement that became widespread after the French Revolution broke up dozens of empires. This trend reached its peak with the First World War but did not disappear afterward. Even today this trend is the main cause of civil wars. In recent years, it has caused wars in North Africa and in the Middle East in countries such as Libya, Sudan, Yemen, and Syria, which we all know very well, and caused millions of people to die and forced them to leave their homes. This situation causes many problems globally, especially the refugee crisis.
According to data from two years ago, 16 million people were displaced from their homes in the Middle East alone. It is no coincidence that these wars are based in the Middle East. There are many reasons besides Jihad, which is the first thing that comes to mind. In this committee, the aim is to find ways to end wars as soon as possible and to ensure long-term peace throughout the region.
